So, we had decided to get on our way early this morning, so as to stop in Gettysburg... we made our way to the Gettysburg National Military Park... where we started off on an auto route, following a map, through the whole town that demarcated various sites of the famous battle... I have to say that neither one of us is particularly aware of American history... however, simply to be there, on the battlefield, makes one aware of the lives that were lost - what is also interesting is that it was so busy, although it was a miserable day, and it was raining, many people had made their way to visit and learn...
we also decided to go to the National cemetery... once again, the number of visitors was amazing... it's unbelievable to think of the number of lives that were lost in the battle... there are hundreds of unnamed graves
...having explored a little bit of Gettysburg, we set Tam Tam to Washington DC...
I was not looking forward to the driving... (and I wasn't even the one behind the wheel!!!) We were caught up in the middle of some serious traffic jams on the interstate, 7/8 miles out of the city, when suddenly Tam Tam, decided to take us a different way... and we travelled along Canal road, which was really quiet... not at all what we thought it would be like coming into the city!!!
We are staying at a hotel in Georgetown, a mile or so out of the city centre... having arrived late afternoon, we are just taking it easy tonight... and tomorrow we will be off exploring!!!
Suzi... time for another sticker... look for WASHINGTON DC... we will be staying here a few days...
Be sure to save some real time to spend at the Smithsonian.

Hi Girls!
ReplyDeleteWet and dreary day on the battlefields, hmm? Must've been rather emotional.
I've always thought Georgetown would be an interesting place to stay, based on some of the descriptions of the area & livestyle.....
Relax & re-charge and Linz hold onto the wallet and cards. =) too many shops & temptations for Jay.
Stay safe

Dear Abraham Lincoln,
ReplyDeletelet me just tell you..sadly, the government of the people, by the people and for the people is no longer a reality,as the people of, by and for government have lost their hearts in too many wars and stupid battles, for no higher purpose, nowhere near as noble as the one of yours...still God bless your intentions and revolutionary changes with the world wide inpact to this day!
Lovely ladies..what a powerful one today!
left me little nostalgic and i'd say and admit sad,as well..humans have gone such a long long way,but how long is the way still ahead of them...why is it taking so long to simply embrace in L O V E , we all inherit by birth and have every right to have and give as freely as we wish at any moment of our life...why is there this exhausting unnecessery fight - because of what exactly???!! saying..you're black, yellow or pink,amish,gay,europian,fat...what does it mean,actually..? it means NOTHING and the day folks finally see it, we're free of masses of grave stones with even no names on...how ironic..people still go and pay respect to this brave unknown who died yars ago for what he believed in!! All of a sudden, there is absolutly no interesst in his colour, size,or who he liked to share love, or bed with....and maybe,he would have liked very much to feel this kind of respect whilst he still lived in the flesh and could actually be sure of how very much the others mean it and love him for exactly w h o he is..
Amen to people who live of Love, by Love and for Love and who let Love live for them, too :-)
You enjoy today beautiful ladies.
Love Light and Joy to you both x x
Hey ladies,
ReplyDeleteDon't forget to take one of the bus tours of Washington - they do several routes, so you need to choose which one you want - but they're just great (especially if you get a really knowledgable & interesting guide). The museums & art galleries are great and FREE!
Don't forget to drop by Five Guys (the famous burger joint) you might even spot the POTUS (Preseident of the United States) there getting lunch for the White House crew!
Gettysburg is very atmospheric - we visited there last year and did the tour too - it's lovely to know exactly where you have been (we almost feel that we're there with you!!).
We suggest leaving the car in Georgetown and using the public transport to get into Washington proper - especially this weekend!
Anyway ...... continue having fun& exploring & RELAXING!
Hugs

Dear Aunties

Hallo there!
ReplyDeleteJust been looking at your blog and some of the websites again. Very informative, I had not been aware of the Underground railway! I knew slaves escaped but had not been aware of the organised resistance that supported them. My goodness how people must have suffered. Coming from SA you have a renewed respect for people who survived slavery.
It is a very rainy, grey day here in Hampshire after a lovely sunshine week. Susie now has a week off for half term and I am planning to take her out and about to do some exploring. Linds I saw your mom one day last week and we went for lunch in Corfe, it was a lovely few hours.
Loving living this through you both. We were incredibly moved by Gettysburg when we visited.
