Well, today was not without incident. It started off very sedately with a wander through the town of Lake Placid, visiting some shops and taking yet more photos of ..... lakes (although Linz assures me all the pics we both take are all very different from the other!) We were interested to discover that Lake Placid continues to be used by the Winter Olympics Team for their training, having been the venue for the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics-hence my photo with the luge. Thanks Ann for your suggestion that we come up to the Adirondack Park.It has been fantastic and although we didn't get to Raquette Lake, maybe that will be part of the next journey we make.... Having ambled with little intent, we stopped by the lake and lazed for a moment, gathering our energies for the next part of our journey-which was to take us to Thousand Islands on Lake Ontario (yup-the original birthplace of 'Thousand Island Dressing' but not the reason we were wanting to visit)....this journey was not to be-at least not today :)
Heading towards Cranberry Lake (isn't that a fantastic name ?) -a little light 'pinged' on the dashboard-no-it was neither the petrol nor the oil light, we just didn't know what it was as there was no manual in the car (National Rentals Don't provide them-we DID ask !).....we stopped at the first opportunity at a General Store/Garage on Route 3, Cranberry Lake (yes, this is their address). A helpful burley gentleman behind the counter looked at the light and said, "Don worry mam, the light's not flashin red, I'd be worried if it were red-just carry on..." So we did.
Moments later we pulled over to the lakeside for a picnic lunch when Linz heard 'a hissin' from the back tyre and found this allen key wedged nicely into the tyre-so we swiftly returned and to cut a very long story short.....we were helped by two gentlemen called 'Tiger and Dell' who stayed with us for about two hours, as the rental roadside assistance couldn't find anyone to get to us. The most amazing thing about this episode (which has to happen on any good roadtrip)-was that neither of them would take any money for their generosity and time and simply asked that we send them a letter telling them about our trip when we get back home. Having chatted to Linz, we realise again just how fortunate we are (in so many ways) to be doing this journey, which isn't just about sightseeing, but about learning .....
The flat tyre incident has now made us change :) those 'non-plans-that-we-never-had' as we were heading towards Niagara Falls tomorrow, before venturing into Canada on Saturday to stay with Tia Virgina (my aunt). Instead, we are heading to Thousand Islands tomorrow and shall be crossing over into Ontario, a route suggested by Dell; making our way back to Niagara Falls after a few days with Tia.
Just a quick note to everyone who's keeping in touch via comments and comments on facebook-we just want to say thanks as it's fun to see the conversations evolving and your thoughts on what's happening :)
Finally, for Susie-today's sticker needs to go onto a sleepy town called WATERTOWN-it's not very big but has a pond with more ducks....
Golly ya'll, that is a real road trip. Wonder if you might learn to change a tyre?! Maybe not then. Watertown is where I had my firt teaching job. There's a big army base there now......When I was there it was a camp and Watertown was hugely more 'sleepy'.
ReplyDeleteYep, those guys are typical mountain men.....very helpful. Kinda live in the moment. No airs and graces stuff.
You're sitting by the lake in an adirondack chair. We have one on the porch overlooking the lake. Such memories. I hope I get to go to Raquette in Aug.
I can picture all of this.
Oh, and I forgot to say that you have just missed Obama. He was in Buffalo yesterday. My family has lived there since the turn of the last century and this is the first time a president has been there that anyone can remember. My mom phoned to say she was watching his arrival at the Buffalo airport. So close you were...........only a long day's drive away.........maybe you'll see him in Washington?!
ReplyDeletehello aunties
ReplyDeletelooks like you are having good fun!!!
lots of love Susie
Ohh no, a light on the dashboard. Perhaps this would help. http://www.jeep.com/en/owners/manuals/
ReplyDeleteThis site offers free download of the manual. As you have the car for 60 odd more days it might come in useful!
You 'gals' are having such an adventure, mountain men, Luge (well bobsleigh)Olympic events. How do you bobsleigh on flat lakes? They are very flat. I think more photos to confirm though. And as for the adirondack chair, who could ask for more.

Glad to see chivalry is not dead! I must say America is sounding more and more like my kind of place. Nice people, beautiful scenery and good food. We are so glad you guys are having such a good time. Susie cannot wait to see what you have been up the and this morning she was sitting on Duncan's lap typing in her little message to you. She is very keen to paste her stickers on her map and we look for the towns and places you mention and I show them to her on the internet. Have a good journey today!
ReplyDeleteHi girls!
ReplyDeleteFully agree with Linz, your photos show HOW you see, not just WHAT you see.
The pic with Linz & the lake, just "picture perfect" we feel the setting, it's like this massive exhale.
Oh yes, and Jay being right-in-there with dem mountain men - so true to character, might as well have been there =0)
Isn't it amazing how different & alike "real" people are, all over the world.

Hi Travellers - caught up with you again - you are certainly not letting the dust settle beneath your feet - the photos and places you travel through sound so lovely - plus all the exciting happenings along the way! Hey - dont take the mickey out of the guys with beards - I had one and he was quite something - not a mountain man, but he did pass the test! The car you finally got looks great, just the ticket for doing a road trip across the U.S.of A. I see the photo of you sitting in the chair Linds - and I hate to show my ignorance, but I must ask, or I will never know - what is a adirondack chair - is it the description of it - or the make, maybe!I think I must follow you a bit oftener - I have looked at the photos and read all that you have written but by now I have forgotten most of the states you have been through - but not Vermont - I think most people would love to be there in the fall, though with all the trees, it must be so beautiful in any season. I was saying to Duncan that I should have had a copy of the planner - though the size of it I guess it would have come out expensive, though maybe you have tossed it in the boot by now - and are taking each day as it comes and making it special - and thats the way to do it! So my travellers I will say au revoir for now - thinking about you and loving you as always - have fun and stay safe - luv Moi
ReplyDeleteGlad you're having such a good time - such an adventure! It's crop day tomorrow and we'll be thinking of you both. x Helen
