First sighting of the Mississippi

***Miles travelled today: 191
***Total Miles: 3672 (wow)
***States travelled through: Wisconsin and we crossed into Iowa briefly but quickly came back....

Good morning news readers ..... Today's weather is foggy, Very foggy and where you are travelling, there will be showers, Heavy showers....if you are heading towards the Mississippi River, the skies will open sending down shards of lightening that will have you looking for shelter very quickly..... and this ends the weather update.
It's a good thing we knew this (not) before setting off to explore Tom Sawyer and and his mate Huck Finn's country.Needless to say, another driving experience that had us booking into a hotel only four hours after we'd started, when we'd planned on travelling about seven in total so we could get 'some mileage behind us'. Linz seems to have an affinity to the Mississippi, it's the 'Mississippi this and the Mississippi that' and she does seem to have read ALOT about the Mississippi [ I thought I was bad with reading but I cede as there is certainly No contest =)]. To say the views were surreal (be it in the rain), is an understatement. This river is something that is referenced at school, in books, films and slavery and so, to see it splayed across the land, is humbling particularly as we tried to imagine how others might have seen it for the first time. We were lucky enough (some might say nerdy) to watch a barge with nine carriers transporting coal up the river, which was fortunate as we were told you don't often see how the river continues to be used (other than leisure).
So although Linz wanted to travel alongside the Mississippi on the 'Great River Road' to 'La Crosse', we decided it would be safer to stay at the hotel and wait for the weather to move on, giving it the 'all clear' for tomorrow. As a result, there is little to report as there are no other incidents.....unless of course one calls 'doing the budget' an 'incident' =)

  1. Doing the budget is definitely an incident, I'd say.

The Mississippi has a personality all of its own. That is some store you got there.

  2. Ohh yuk, budget talks.

You get proper weather over there. I love thunder and lightening but perhaps not the best when driving. Good decision to seek shelter I would think.

It's great following your blog. Keep going, great photos too :-)

  5. Wow! Linz chattering away, hands explaining just right. Hair getting in her way, wanting to follow barges without a plan?

    Sounds like a "wild"ly entertaining & electrifying time =)

    Stay safe
