...Going Live!!!

Today we have sent everyone the link to our blog!!! One step closer to our Roadtrip - as everyone has heard so much about it... I bet you were all beginning to think that there was no blog and we were just having you all on...

We are now down to the last seven days... next week this time we will be landing in Boston!!!

All the planning has been done... all that planning that was not going to get done - as this is largely pipped as a spontaneous trip!!! But clearly as you all know us... not planning would be problematic... for at least one of us!!!

So here's to more 'not planning'...

Wow!!! I cannot believe that it has been another three weeks since we were last 'practicing' on the blog!!! We are now down to single figures... 9 days to go!!! We have sorted everything out that needs sorting out, we have little piles of things everywhere that we are taking with us... and we are actually leaving work at the end of this week with completed reports, closed cases... and up to date recording!!!
...and now for the title and the picture... How could we resist??? Jay just had to get the pants and I just had to take a photo!!!

I can't believe that it is nearly time for us to leave on our roadtrip... we have always wanted to take time out and travel when we turned 40... and it always seemed like it was way off in the distance... and now - here it is... the big 4-0 for me in July and Jay in September!!! We are really fortunate, in so many ways, to be able to take the time out... and just go on an adventure...

AAA Trip Tik Planner

I have been compiling a proposed route on the AAA site that allows you to plan your route across the country... have been doing it for a few days... printing off various sections, that I will get bound to take with us... No - I'm not planning!!!

The route allows for 'spontaneous' planning!!!

I have actually taken a photo of the route - so I am going to upload the photo to the blog... for all to see!!!

I have also found another amazing website, which covers all the National Parks... which I have added to our 'Handy Roadtrip Websites' list... if you have a moment have a look at some of the amazing places that we are hoping to include in our journey...The National Parks that we are planning on visiting are:*** Acadia National Park in Maine; *** Badlands National Park in South Dakota; *** Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming; *** Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming/Montana; *** Glacier National Park in Montana; *** Olympic National Park in Washington... these are the ones along our proposed route... however there are also some smaller National Parks that are just off the route... which no doubt we could plan a spontaneous detour to!!!

We have been looking at a fantastic website, the link is in the above titled 'Handy Roadtrip Websites!!!' It is set up by an American author who has travelled every road in the USA... or so it appears... well, in my 'getting to know your computer' I e-mailed him on his blog... with a few questions - and he has e-mailed his response... and now I have figured out how to upload to the blog the e-mail thread!!! I'm even getting into computer speak!!! I may become a blogger yet!!!

May + June + July, coast to coast, Boston to the Pacific -- that's quite a trip! The weather shouldn't be a big issue by May / June -- though this winter has been cold and snowy, so who knows what the coming summer will be like. The US tourist season kicks off earnest mid-June, when schools let out and families hit the highways, but (apart from special places like the National Parks) generally it's not hard to find a room, any time of year, so in most places you should be fine leaving it until you turn up.


My main advice on that subject: find a room before you eat dinner -- although it can be tempting to "do some extra miles" after dark, it's risky and also means you won't be able to see anything apart from other cars' headlights...


There are all sorts of moderate/budget priced motels -- and along with the national chains, there are lots of locally owned motels, usually a few dollars cheaper and much more interesting. My favorite "national chain" is Best Western, which is often the nicest of moderate priced options.


Now onto planning. Though my book is structured into routes, I'm all in favor of detours -- starting out on the "Oregon Trail" route, you could head south at Albany NY, drive down the Hudson River valley via the "Big Apple", then follow my Appalachian Trail route to the Amish areas of the PA Dutch Country (and nearby Gettysburg battelfield is very interesting, too), which is lovely country to explore.


Just down the road, Philadelphia is an under-rated city, too -- perhaps the most historic in the whole USA. (Alas, I don't cover Philly in RTUSA...)


Then you could work your way northwest across PA and NY, maybe detouring north to see Niagara Falls (and Buffalo, another neat old under-loved US city). The Rust Belt areas along the Great Lakes are a bit sad (but Detroit and Cleveland et al are great if you like industrial archeology -- on a par with Liverpool for fading glory and characterful populations)


OK, now onto the west! I cover Glacier Nat'l Park in my US-2 Great Northern route (plan your visit around a leisurely drive over the Going-to-the-Sun Road, which takes you thru some of the loveliest Rocky Mountain meadows and past miles of great hiking trails). Glacier has some fantastic old lodges -- great for a drink, even if you decide to camp out and save the $150 a night. All over the western USA, car camping (you can buy a tent and a pair of sleeping bags for the cost of a couple nights in a motel...) will let you stay in the nicest parks (like Yellowstone or Yosemite), which have limited accommodations and are often booked up a year in advance.

Only 31 days to go......

This is The First time I'M on the blog and There are only 31 days to go-until that is, we begin to experience things like ..... the Red Sox play on the diamond against the Angels, a real live rodeo with bucking broncos, Chinese take-away in a carton, seeing the Amish in their buggies, talking to nerdy geyser gazers, riding with Real macho cowboys (mmm and cowgirls if we find any )....seeing shows in Chicago......you name it - and we're Doing it and guess what, there are 31 days to go ! How exciting and frightening !!!
